What is the Difference Between US and EU PostHog API Hosts?

PostHog offers two different API hosts for users, depending on their region: US and EU hosts. The primary difference between these hosts lies in where the data is processed and stored, which may have an impact on your store’s compliance with data protection regulations like GDPR in the EU.

US vs. EU PostHog API Hosts

  • US API Host: This is the default host for PostHog. If you are located in North America or do not have strict data residency requirements, the US host should work for you. However, note that data will be stored and processed in the United States.

  • EU API Host: If your store operates in the European Union or you have customers based there, using the EU PostHog API host may be more appropriate. This ensures that your data remains within the EU, helping you comply with regulations such as GDPR, which requires certain data handling practices for EU residents.

Why Choose One Over the Other?

  • Data Residency: If your business is located in the EU or if you want to ensure compliance with data residency laws, using the EU host is recommended.
  • Performance: For users based in the US or Canada, the US API host may provide better performance in terms of speed and latency.

How to Choose Between US and EU API Hosts

To select the appropriate API host, simply choose your region in the settings of your PostHog account or within the PixieHog app configuration. This will direct your events to the correct API endpoint, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with relevant laws.
