Configuration

After installing PixieHog and setting up your PostHog project API key, follow these steps to configure tracking for Shopify web pixel events and PostHog JS Web.

1. Enable Shopify Web Pixel Events

To start collecting Shopify web pixel events in PostHog:

  1. Open PixieHog in Shopify: Go to your Shopify Admin, find PixieHog under “Apps,” and open it.
  2. Go to the Web Pixel Events Tab: In PixieHog’s “Web Pixel Events” tab, turn it on by clicking the Turn On button.
  3. Enable Web Pixel Events: Toggle on the option to enable automatic tracking of key Shopify events, including:
    • Page views
    • Checkout started
    • Checkout completed
    • Add to cart
    • More events

By enabling this feature, PixieHog will capture these events and send them to your PostHog dashboard automatically.

2. Activate PostHog JavaScript Events

To track more customized interactions on your Shopify site, enable PostHog JS Web Config in PixieHog:

  1. Open PixieHog in Shopify: Go to your Shopify Admin, find PixieHog under “Apps,” and open it.
  2. Enable JS Web Config Tracking: In PixieHog’s “JS Web” tab, turn it on by clicking the Turn On button.
  3. Configure JS Web: Toggle on configuration options, such as:
    • Enable heatmaps
    • Disable surveys
    • Disable session recording
    • Enable recording console logs
    • More options

This feature allows you to capture detailed, event-by-event insights into user interactions, making it easy to track unique user behaviors on your Shopify site.

3. Set Up a Custom Reverse Proxy (Optional)

For improved data accuracy and enhanced security, set up a Custom Reverse Proxy:

  1. Open PixieHog in Shopify: Go to your Shopify Admin, find PixieHog under “Apps,” and open it.
  2. Select Custom Reverse Proxy: In PixieHog’s “Overview” tab, select “Custom Reverse Proxy” in the API Host selector.
  3. Add Your Custom Reverse Proxy: Enter your custom reverse proxy in the Custom Reverse Proxy input field and save.

Setting up a Reverse Proxy allows you to bypass ad blockers that might prevent tracking scripts from functioning. To learn more about this feature, read What is a Custom API Host?.
